The God of Yesterday Is Not Enough

In 1 Kings 17, the widow of Zarephath and her son were remembered by the Lord. They were surely going to die, and she even said it herself (1 Kings 17:12). But the Lord visited her through the prophet. And they did not die. They witnessed supernatural provision in the time of drought. Everyday the miracle was renewed. More oil. More flour. More life.

Here comes a challenge. Her son fell sick and died. In the presence of God. In a miracle-filled environment. In a house full of joy. A tragedy arises. The atmosphere shifts from joy to hostility. "Why, O prophet, have you come to judge me? Are you even a true prophet, or an agent of the devil?" (1 Kings 17:18 paraphrased).

When emotions take over and all logic is lost, we forget what God did yesterday and question Him today. "Lord, why have You left me?" Yet you are in the very same environment and you are eating a miracle.

God comes through. He raises the child. And the woman confesses: "Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth" (1 Kings 17:24).

Ah, so you had already forgotten the provisions. The yesterday victories. This one loss, though dear to your heart, has made you doubt God?

We often fall into this trap. Our being here is already a miracle, yet when issues arise we begin to question the very source of miracles. We begin to question ourselves. Yet your tragedy now was even supposed to be your normal life two years ago.

The God of yesterday is the same today and forever more (Hebrews 13:8). Don’t be quick to forget what he has done, let that elevate your faith into trusting that he will do even more.
